Plaque honouring Pastor Goffredo Varaglia

On 21st October, 2000 a plaque was unveiled to remember this Waldensian pastor who was hanged and burned at the stake at this location in 1558. Varaglia was born in Busca, in the Maira Valley, in 1507. After having attended the Franciscan schools he was ordained priest in 1528. He later converted to Protestantism, attended the Academy founded by John Calvin in Geneva and was sent to Piedmont to pastor and preach in the Waldensian valleys. After a public theological debate in Busca with friar Angelo Malerba, he was arrested by the Inquisition in Barge (CN) and taken to Turin to be judged. He was condemned to the stake and refused to abjure.
