Protestant Embassies’ Chapel

The Chapel of Protestant Embassies (referring to Prussian and English Protestants) was established in 1825 by the ambassador of the King of Prussia to the Savoy, count Waldburg-Truchsess. It was first located in Via dell’Ospedale, and in 1848 it was moved to the Bellora Palace between Via della Meridiana and Viale del Re, known today respectively as Via Carlo Alberto and Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. The chapel was reserved exclusively for diplomatic personnel, foreigners and Waldensians who lived in the city; Catholics were formally forbidden to enter during worship services. Early on, league ministers asked the Waldensian Board to send a pastor to act as chaplain: Jean Pierre Bonjour (1827-1832) and then Amedeo Bert (1832-1849) were sent to cover this role.
