Lutheran Evangelical Church

In 1899 the first German speaking Lutheran Evangelical Congregation was established in Florence and in 1901 architect Riccardo Mazzanti designed the new church between via de’ Bardi and Lungarno Torrigiani. The façade is in white marble and red brick in a neo-Mediaeval style prothyrum or porch with a light blind covered gallery and a rose window. Inside,  a single space with an apse and trussed roof. After it was damaged during the Second World War and by the 1966 floods, architect Vinicio Brilli was put in charge of the restoration work. The organ is especially interesting: it came from Lübeck and was restored and expanded in the 1980s.

On June the 30th, 2017 for the “Solus Christus – Lutero, 500 anni di Riforma” (Solus Christus, Luther 500-  Years of the Reform), the garden in front of the church was named the Martin Luther Garden.

Currently worship and activities of the Swiss Reformed Church are also held on the premises.
